Nom porté en Alsace et en Allemagne (variantes Hooge, Hog, Hoge), rencontré aussi aux Pays-Bas (variante : De Hoog). Sans doute le surnom d'un personnage grand ou hautain (bas-allemand hog, à rapprocher de l'allemand hoch = haut). On le retrouve en Belgique et dans le nord de la France sous les formes Hooghe, Dehooghe (moyen néerlandais hooch, même sens).
